My choice for studying literature was actually not influenced by my grandfather at all…At least, I never consciously connected the two occasions before. We never spoke of literature together because I was too young back then, when I was in China. To this day, I still get sad thinking about how I only got to know him as my grandfather, and not as a friend. There are many things that I wish I could have done differently while he was alive.
To answer your question, I do not see the world as night and day. I have learned to walk by my own light but there are times when I need to tend to my candle again because the flame does get blown in various directions by passersby. Solitude is sweet and it feeds my light, but occasionally I also let other flames touch mine. - And thank you for your reminder; I will not let it go out.
